SEO cost in Nepal has no fixed price list. What you pay depends on how much work is done each month, how competitive your searches are and whether a freelancer, an agency or a staff member does it. Most small businesses pay a monthly fee rather than a single payment, and real results usually take several months, not weeks.
I get asked this question in almost every first meeting, so here is the honest version. If you are new to the subject, my guide to how SEO works in Nepal explains the basics first. This article only covers money and time: what you pay for, what pushes the price up, how long you wait, and how to tell whether the spend is worth it.
What exactly are you paying for when you buy SEO?
You are paying for skilled time spent making your website easier for Google to find, understand and trust. Google itself describes SEO as being “about helping search engines understand your content” in its SEO Starter Guide (updated December 2025). That work splits into a few kinds of jobs.
- Audit and fixes: finding why pages are not indexed, slow or confusing, then fixing them. My technical SEO basics guide covers what these errors look like.
- Page work: rewriting titles, headings and service pages so each one answers a real search.
- Content: new articles and pages, in English, Nepali or both.
- Local presence: your Google Business Profile, reviews and local listings.
- Reporting: a monthly summary of what changed and what happened next.
A cheap package usually includes only the last item. That is the first thing to check in any quote.
How much does SEO cost in Nepal for a small business?
Nepali SEO pricing is not standardised, and I could not find any independent survey of what providers here charge. So the fairest answer is a set of tiers based on scope, with international benchmarks to anchor them. The nearest benchmark is India: in an Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers (published December 2023, updated August 2024), 76% of India based SEOs charged $1,000 or less per month. The most common monthly retainer across all respondents was $501 to $1,000.
At the very bottom, freelance marketplaces sell packaged work. Fiverr’s 2026 SEO cost guide shows monthly SEO gigs starting from $150, $250 and $495. Those prices tell you what a template service costs, not what your business needs.
| Tier | What you usually get | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| One off audit | A written list of technical, page and local problems, ranked by priority | Businesses with someone in house who can make the fixes |
| Local SEO retainer | Business Profile care, reviews plan, service page updates, monthly report | Clinics, cafés, gyms and shops serving one city |
| Content and local retainer | Everything above plus new pages or articles every month | Service firms competing across Kathmandu Valley or several cities |
| Competitive or ecommerce retainer | Ongoing technical work, many product or category pages, content and links | Online stores and businesses chasing national searches |
Each step up the table costs more because it buys more hours, not because the word “SEO” is bigger on the invoice.
Which factors push the price of SEO up or down?
The biggest price driver is how hard your searches are to win. A physiotherapy clinic in Bharatpur competes with a handful of local pages. A hotel in Thamel competes with booking platforms and dozens of established sites.
- Competition: more competitors with strong sites means more content and more time.
- Current state of your site: a site with broken pages, no mobile layout or duplicate content needs repair before growth.
- Size: a five page brochure site and a store with 800 products are different jobs.
- Language: writing proper Nepali Unicode pages as well as English ones doubles some of the content work.
- Locations: each branch or city you serve needs its own real page and profile.
- Who writes the content: if you can supply expert input, the provider spends less time researching.
Should you pay a freelancer, an agency or hire someone in house?
For most small Nepali businesses, a capable freelancer or small specialist is the best value, because you pay for the work rather than for account managers. An agency makes sense when you need writers, developers and designers working together at volume. Hiring in house makes sense only when SEO is a full time job for your business.
Salaries help you compare. A 2026 necojobs guide to SEO salaries in Nepal puts entry level SEO staff at NPR 20,000 to 35,000 a month, mid level at NPR 40,000 to 80,000, and senior at NPR 80,000 to 150,000 or more. Remember that one junior hire rarely covers technical fixes, writing and local work alone.
| Option | Strength | Trade off |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | Direct contact with the person doing the work, flexible scope | Limited hours; check they can handle technical fixes |
| Agency | A team that can produce a lot of content and development | Higher overheads; your account may go to a junior |
| In house hire | Knows your business deeply, always available | Salary every month, training, and needs tools |
Is SEO a one time cost or a monthly cost?
SEO is both: there is a one time setup cost and then an ongoing monthly cost. The one time part covers the audit, technical repairs, setting up Search Console and your Business Profile, and fixing your main pages. The monthly part covers new content, reviews, local listings, monitoring and reporting.
The cheapest moment to do the one time work is when you are building or redesigning a website. Google’s own page, Do you need an SEO? (updated June 2026), says “a great time to hire is when you’re considering a site redesign”. Fixing structure after launch always costs more than building it right.
How long does SEO take before it starts working?
SEO takes weeks for small fixes and several months for competitive rankings. Google’s SEO Starter Guide says it plainly: “Some changes might take effect in a few hours, others could take several months.” Anyone who promises page one in a fortnight is guessing or cheating.
Here is the pattern I tell clients to expect. These are my working stages, not a guarantee.
The first few weeks fix what is already broken.
Early wins come from removing blocks. Pages that were not indexed get indexed, a missing Business Profile gets verified, and titles start matching what people search. Some small local businesses start to get more calls from Maps at this stage.
The first few months build pages that deserve to rank.
New service pages and articles need time to be crawled, tested against competitors and trusted. You will usually see impressions rise in Search Console before clicks follow. This is the stage where most owners lose patience.
After six months the work starts compounding.
Pages that earned their place keep bringing visitors without extra spend. Each new page benefits from the trust the site has already built. This is why I treat SEO as a long term asset, not a campaign.
What makes SEO results come faster or slower?
Results come faster when the site is technically clean, the business is well known offline and the searches are local. They come slower for new domains, crowded national searches and sites that publish thin or copied content. How quickly you approve changes matters too; a page waiting three weeks for sign off is three weeks lost.
Location plays a big part. Ranking for “dental clinic Chitwan” is a different challenge from ranking across Kathmandu, which I cover in my guide to local SEO in Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan.
How do you judge whether SEO is worth the money?
Judge SEO by enquiries and sales, not by rankings alone. Google handles almost all search here, with a 95.78% share of searches in Nepal in September 2026 according to Statcounter, so organic visibility is worth real money. The question is whether it pays back for you.
- Work out what one new customer is worth to you over a year.
- Track calls, WhatsApp messages and form enquiries that come from Google, and ask new customers how they found you.
- Compare that value with your monthly SEO spend after six months, not after six weeks.
- Check that clicks in Search Console are growing for searches that bring buyers, not just readers.
A clinic that gains a few regular patients a month from search can recover a modest retainer quickly. A business whose customers never search online may be better off putting that money elsewhere.
What red flags should you watch for when buying SEO?
The clearest red flag is a guaranteed ranking. Google’s hiring page states: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google.” Its guide to how Search works adds that Google does not accept payment to rank a site higher.
- Promises of first position, or a fixed number of keywords on page one within a month.
- Unsolicited emails offering to fix your SEO, which Google warns about directly.
- Secret methods the provider will not explain.
- Reports full of rankings for phrases nobody searches.
- Requests for full control of your accounts at the audit stage. Google advises giving an auditor read access to Search Console only.
This is how I scope SEO work before quoting a client.
I start with a discovery call and a look at Search Console, then I write down what is broken, what is missing and what competitors are doing better. Only then can I say how many hours a month the job needs. On the Kathmandu Model Hospital SEO project, the work was content strategy and planning across many departments, which is a very different scope from on page fixes for a supplier with a product catalogue.
My view is simple. Pay for a clear plan with named tasks, and ask to see the work each month.
These are the questions business owners ask me most about SEO cost.
Is cheap SEO worth it in Nepal?
Usually not, if cheap means a fixed package with no audit of your site. Low priced packages tend to repeat the same tasks for every client and report rankings for terms that bring no customers. A small, focused scope done properly is better value than a big list done badly.
Can I pay Google directly to rank higher?
No. Google says it does not accept payment to crawl a site more often or rank it higher. You can pay for Google Ads, which appear as sponsored results, but that is advertising and stops the day you stop paying.
Can I do SEO myself to save money?
Yes, you can handle a lot of the basics yourself. Set up your Business Profile, ask customers for reviews and give every service its own clear page; my Google Business Profile setup guide walks through the first step. Bring in help for technical problems or when you run out of time.
How long should an SEO contract be?
Six months is a sensible first commitment, because that is long enough to see whether the work is moving the right numbers. Be careful with long lock in contracts before you have seen any delivery. A good provider is happy to work month to month once trust is built.
Should I stop SEO once I rank on the first page?
You can slow down, but stopping completely is risky. Competitors keep publishing, and Google keeps changing how results look. Most businesses move to a lighter monthly plan that protects what they have earned.
Here is what I would do next if I were you.
Before you compare any quotes, write down the five searches you most want to be found for and check where you stand today. Then ask every provider for a written scope with named monthly tasks. If you would like me to look at your site and give you a clear scope, see my search and AI visibility service or get in touch here.
